Foam may be an indication of unfiltered ammonia in the water, but in most cases, foam forms on the surface of the pond water because decaying organic materials produce an oily residue that easily foams up when energetically shaken or beaten such as with water splashing into the pond from a waterfall (same as egg whites foam when beaten). Foam when present is more abundant in the morning than late in the day because it persist longer in cool ambient temperatures.

An easy way to eliminate surface foam, or at least improve the situation significantly, is to skim the oily residue out by overflowing the surface water down the pond overflow by adding fresh water under the surface with a garden hose (while overflowing, help the floam down the overflow drain by pushing it gently towards it with a fine mesh net).

Products such as bacterial sludge reducers and Montmorillonite clay help as well. There are also foam removers that prevent foam formation for a period of around twenty-four hours.

Microve-Lift Defoamer removes foam surface for about twenty-four hours. One once treats 500 gallons, one pint treats 8000 gallons. Available sizes: 16oz, and 32oz.
Microbe-Lift Sludge Away digests some oreganic compounts and reduces the rest to a form that can be removed by your filtration system. Dosage: 2oz per 100 gallons, then 1oz per hundred gallons weekly. Available sizes: 32oz and 1 gal.
