Several things can contribute to cloudy water: dirt runoffs, floating particulate, monocellular algae, bacteria blooms, and organic debris decaying in the pond. Here we will help you identify the culprit(s) and recommend approaches to resolve the issue.

The most common problem that people face is monocellular algae. Most algae blooms ("green soup") happen in the Spring when the sun comes out and warms the water. Algae rapidly multiplies feeding on the ammonia produced by the fish or the nutrients released by decaying organic debris or plants. The first thing to do is to clean the pond and filter(s), then use the appropriate product to keep the algae at bay or install a UV filter and prevent algae from developing altogether.

TetraPond AlgaeControl kills all algae types and is safe for fish when used as directed. One teaspoon of AlgaeControl treats 60 gallons, one ounce treats 360 gallons. Available sizes: 250ml (8.4oz), 500ml (16.9oz), and 3l (101.4oz).
Follow up algaecides a with Barley & Peat Extract maintenance program keep water clear and retard algae growth. One teaspoon of TetraPond Barley & Peat Extract treats 25 gallons, one once treats 150 gallons. The TetraPond product available sizes: 250ml (8.4oz), 500ml (16.9oz). We also have a concentrate where one quart treats 9600 gallons..

Very common in this area is string algae, also known as blanket algae. It is invasive and very aggressive, left untreated it could very well invade the whole pond. String algae mainly feeds off organic debris decaying in the pond, therefore, the first defense is a clean pond, especially deposits on the bottom, then apply an appropriate algaecide. TetraPond AlgaeControl kills string algae in the pond, but GreenClean is more effective on exposed string algae as on waterfalls, in streams, and on the rocks around the pond

Sprinkle GreenClean directly onto algae; the product kills algae on contact. When fish are present, do not use more than 8oz for each 1000 gallons of pond water.

For fountains and water features without fish, Fountec by McGrayel does a great job. Fountec is safe for birds, pets, and other animals, but the method it uses to kill algae impairs the breathing of fish. The product not only kills algae but will keep water clear of algae on an ongoing basis.

Fountec is applied weekly, 1 tsp treats 200 gallons, 1oz treats 2500 gallons. Fountec is available in 8oz and 64oz containers.
